Ankle arthrodesis or ankle fusion is a less invasive procedure to treat arthritis of the ankle joint. It can help relieve pain and restore mobility without requiring total ankle replacement surgery. Arthritis is a degenerative condition that wears down the bone and cartilage over time, causing joint pain and inflammation and making movement difficult.
Ankle arthrodesis is usually performed after non-surgical treatments have proven ineffective or when arthritis has reached a severe stage. This treatment can help improve ankle flexibility by removing bone spurs and damaged tissue.
Other cases where ankle arthrodesis is useful are:
Dr Alexander will perform a complete diagnosis and examination before advising on treatment.
Dr Alexander performs ankle arthrodesis surgery while you are under general anaesthesia and your foot is numb. He makes a small incision close to the ankle to access the joint.
Next, he removes any damaged cartilage between the bones and replaces it with metal screws to keep them in place. Dr Alexander may also perform a bone graft to aid ankle fusion.
The goal of surgery is to restore your mobility and flexibility in the ankle. Once the elements have been added, Dr Alexander will stitch the incisions closed and bandage the area.
Bone fusion can take 6-12 weeks, and during this time, it's important to minimise swelling and keep your foot raised. In addition, you will be required to use a wheelchair, crutches or knee scooter to avoid placing weight on the impacted foot.
Dr Alexander will also monitor your progress through X-rays and scans to check the alignment and may recommend physiotherapy and prescriptions to help improve recovery.
