Total Ankle Replacement Surgery

The ankle is a complex web of joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves working together to help us walk, run, step, stand and more. Much of our mobility comes from our ankles, but this also makes them prone to conditions that impact their function. Arthritis is one of the leading causes of ankle damage and often results in the need for total ankle replacement or arthroplasty.

What is total ankle replacement surgery?

Total ankle replacement surgery is a procedure that removes the damaged ankle joint to replace it with an artificial joint. This is done when the cartilage has weakened and worn off due to severe arthritis, causing pain and inflammation in the joint. Dr Alexander is skilled in performing total ankle replacement to help restore mobility, comfort and function.

Why is total ankle replacement surgery done?

Dr Alexander performs total ankle replacement surgery in patients whose arthritis has progressed extensively. Arthritis is a condition that wears away at the bone and cartilage, causing changes to the anatomy and function of the bones and joints. The two most common types of arthritis affecting the ankle are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, leading to pain and inflammation of the joints.

Dr Alexander will perform several scans and X-rays to assess the damage to your ankle before recommending treatment. If conventional treatments have been tried and failed, ankle replacement surgery is the next step.

How is total ankle replacement surgery performed?

Total ankle replacement is a complex surgical procedure whereby a metal or plastic implant replaces the damaged ankle joint. You will be under general anaesthesia, and your foot will be completely numb during the process. Dr Alexander will first make an incision to access the damaged tissue and remove the joint, bone and cartilage before placing metal and plastic components to recreate the ankle joint.

If your ankle or foot has suffered a deformity from arthritis, Dr Alexander may also correct this. He then stitches the incisions and bandages the ankle with a stint to prevent misalignment.

Recovery after total ankle replacement

Your recovery will include several weeks of keeping your leg elevated to ensure the ankle heals properly. In addition, total ankle replacement surgery is an inpatient procedure that may require you to remain in the hospital overnight to review your progress.

Dr Alexander will do regular check-ins to monitor your recovery and inform you when you are ready to start mobility exercises. It can take several weeks of physiotherapy and wearing a cast or boot before you can place weight on your foot.
