Haglund's Deformity Surgery

Haglund's deformity is a condition affecting the bone and soft tissue of the foot. It's caused by myriad issues, including genetic predisposition, hollow foot, obesity, intensive running and damage to the foot. The condition causes a growth or ball to form at the back of the heel under the Achilles tendon, leading to inflammation of the heel and tendon and orthopaedic pain.

While not all cases of Haglund's deformity require intervention, the prominence of the bone growth or pressure on the Achilles tendon can lead to discomfort or mobility issues. In order to correct the growth, Dr Alexander performs Haglund's deformity surgery, which may include Achilles tendon repair.

What are the signs of Haglund's deformity?

The most apparent sign of Haglund's deformity is a growth or pressure point on the heel close to the Achilles tendon. This may be noticed when wearing tight shoes or performing intense exercise. If you notice an unusual bump on the back of your foot or pain in your heel, arrange an appointment with Dr Alexander for a proper diagnosis.

When is Haglund's deformity surgery necessary?

Dr Alexander will recommend treatment after thoroughly examining and X-raying your foot or feet. In most cases, surgery is only used when traditional methods have failed. However, it also depends on the stage of Haglund's deformity and your medical history.

What happens during Haglund's deformity surgery?

Haglund's deformity surgery is an outpatient procedure that Dr Alexander performs in his doctor's suite. You will receive general anaesthesia, and your foot will be completely numb. If you need Achilles tendon reconstruction or bone removal, Dr Alexander will make an incision next to the tendon or along the midline. Then, he will remove pieces of the prominent bone and correct the Achilles tendon or do a transfer if this is not possible.

Once complete, Dr Alexander will stitch the incisions and dress your heel in sterile bandages. You will be able to go home on the day of the surgery but will need a lift home and some to assist you for the next few weeks.

Recovery after Haglund's deformity surgery

Much like surgery, your recovery will depend on the stage of your Haglund's deformity and what procedures Dr Alexander performed. For example, with bone removal, you will be required to wear a stint for several weeks, and with tendon repair, you will need a foot boot and physical therapy. Dr Alexander will provide a full breakdown of your recovery and monitor your process with regular check-ins.
