Ankle arthroscopy, or keyhole surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and repair issues with the ankle. It involves using a small camera and small surgical tools to remove, repair and reconstruct structures in the ankle.
The main benefit of ankle arthroscopy is that it allows Dr Alexander to diagnose the issue and treat it simultaneously.
He may recommend this procedure for one or more of the following conditions:
Ankle arthroscopy is ideal for those who prefer minimally invasive surgery and quicker recovery time. You may be put under general anaesthesia or receive a nerve blocker to the area in your foot.
Dr Alexander makes a tiny incision in the ankle area and inserts a small camera with a light connected to a monitor. After assessing the condition of your ankle, he will use small surgical instruments to make any repairs or adjustments to the bone, ligaments and tendons.
He will then stitch the small incision and bandage your ankle.
One of the main benefits of this procedure is the quicker recovery time. You can go home the same day of the procedure with prescribed painkillers. Dr Alexander will advise you on what to do during your recovery, but it's best to keep your foot elevated for several days.
Walking may be uncomfortable at first, and your ankle will be swollen, but you should be able to return to normal activities within a few days or weeks.
